Digital Hearing Aids Telford – Digital Hearing Aids Shropshire
Digital Hearing Aids Telford – Digital Hearing Aids Shropshire
Telford in Shropshire was born in the 1960s, a new town which brought together and expanded existing small towns in the area. These included Dawley, Wellington, Madeley and Oakengate. In fact the town was originally to be called Dawley New Town, but as more housing was developed the name was changed to Telford after the engineer Thomas Telford. Telford now incorporates the Ironbridge Gorge, a World Heritage Site.
Thomas Telford was a Scottish 18th/19th century civil engineer and architect. Notably he is known for his work as a road, bridge and canal builder especially in Shropshire. He was elected the first president of the Institution of Civil Engineers. Today there is a statue built to honour him in the town.
Telford itself is an overspill town for the West Midlands conurbation of Birmingham, Wolverhampton, Dudley and Walsall. The old towns, now wards, were much older most of them appearing in the Doomsday Book.
Telford is sometimes known as the ‘Birthplace of Industry’ because it is situated close to Coalbrookdale and other places in the Ironbridge Gorge along the Shropshire Coalfield. The Ironbridge Gorge is internationally recognised as an important area for the Industrial Revolution.
What did you say?
Stewart Lee, the comedian was born in Wellington. He has performed as a stand-up comic at many Edinburgh Fringe festivals and written and appeared in several TV series. But do you always hear the punch line of a joke?
Do you struggle to hear normal conversations? If either of these scenarios ring true with you it might be time to think about a hearing test. Castle Comfort Digital Hearing Aids offer free tests with a trained audiologist. It’s really worth considering because depending on the cause of your hearing loss, you might be able to get it rectified or at least be able to hear better using a digital hearing aid.
Don’t remain in the aural dark, give us a call on 01782 69 80 90 or email us to set up an appointment for a free test.
Things to see in and around Telford
The Ironbridge Gorge as we mentioned is a UNESCO World Heritage site which means it is of significant natural beauty. The Gorge was formed in the Ice Age and carries the River Severn south to the Bristol Channel. It is also where you will find the Iron Bridge.
The Iron Bridge was built in the late 18th century, the first arched cast iron bridge ever built. Cast iron hadn’t been used before as it was too expensive, but a local blast furnace made it available at a good price, so the bridge was built to link Coalbrookdale and Broseley.
The bridge is Grade I listed.
Wenlock Priory
Just 10 miles from Telford is another interesting historic site. Wenlock Priory now a ruin was built in the 12th century on the site of an earlier 7th century monastery. The grounds are known for their many topiary sculptures.
Sunnycroft
This Victorian suburban villa was a typical residence for the middle classes at the time trying to imitate the upper classes! Sunnycroft was built and extended during the late 19th century. It is unique in that it remains completely as it was, complete with untouched interiors, an orchard, stables and pig sties etc.
Famous faces
Despite being a new town, Telford has managed connections with a number of well known people over the years:
· Indie band The Sunshine Underground was formed by 4 students at New College Telford in 2000. They did a tour of 12 gigs earlier this year
· The band T’Pau led by Carol Decker was formed in the area in the 1980s. They had a number of hits including most famously ‘China in Your Hand’. They are still performing today.
· Jonathan Corbett is a TV Food presenter. He was born in Telford and went off to catering college before working for Marco Pierre White at his 3 Michelin Star restaurant in London
· England footballer Billy Wright came from Ironbridge. He played for Wolverhampton Wanders throughout his career and was the first player to earn 100 caps playing for his country. A statue in his honour stands outside Wolves Football Club
· Another ‘son of Telford’ is boxer Richie Woodhall who held the WBC super middleweight title until beaten by Joe Calzaghie in 2002. He is now retired
· The first UK Big Brother winner, Craig Phillips grew up in Newport, Telford
· The late Labour MP and trade unionist (General Secretary of the TUC) Len Murray was born in Telford
· Inventor of the first mechanical computer, Charles Babbage lived at nearby Dudmaston Hall for some time. You can see some of his first part-finished machines at the London Science Museum
